Of course we still have our famous music galleries open and ready for your pleasure. Thanks to all of those who have given us feedback on these galleries. We're proud of the fact that we have created a place that so many of you seem to enjoy. We've got photos from 2004 year's Skidmore Jazz Institute featuring trumpeter Randy Brecker and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb. We're looking forward to another excellent line-up this year. Look for photos from this year's concerts in early July. Also showing in our Music Photo Gallery are pictures from the Gazebo stage at this year's Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and a tribute to the everyday musicians who perform for us in our communities. Browse through the photos, I hope you enjoy them.
(May
8, 2005) The Musuem of Comic Book Advertising proudly announces the opening
of new web gallery space we are calling the Tootsie
Roll Theatre. The exhibits found in this gallery are made up of ad that
were presented as comic strips; mini-adventures where entertainment and marketing
merged. Tootsie Rolls pioneered this unique form of advertising and as an
established American household name in the 1930’s and 40’s, its advertising
supported the fledgling comic book industry. Comic books as an American art
form owe much to this early support of a fledgling industry.
Currently
featured in the Tootsie Roll Theatre are several comic book ads created by
legendary golden age artist, C.C. Beck. Beck's work on Captain Marvel helped
define the comic book industry in the 1940's. These ads, featuring a blond
Captain Marvel clone, produced in the same era as Beck's most important work
with Fawcett Publishing, demonstrate Beck's talents at their commercial best.
We also display a couple of episodes from the "Tootsie Roll of Honor." These short "morality plays" present the stories of young heroes who were able to save the day thanks to the energy that Tootsie Rolls provided. They provide an interesting glimpse of World War II era social mores.
The Museum of Comic Book Advertising is a tribute to an American art form and to the unique products whose advertising revenue made it possible. Come explore the Museum. Wander through the Hall of Covers to see some beautiful artwork. There's hours of entertainment waiting to be found in the museum displays. Check back often as new displays are created regularly.
